Partners in India
Health care Partners:
Amrita-Seattle will raise fund and support groups like Ramakrishna Math and Mission to run charitable dispensary, mobile clinic and disaster response in underserved and economically poor areas in India. With more fund, they will be able to do Point of Care test i.e. analyze the specimens on the spot in remote rural areas where no diagnostic testing facilities are available and appropriate medication will be delivered immediately. Presently, fund is very limited for Point of Care test and medication and, therefore, needs immediate resources to continue.
Fund Raising for Relief Operations during natural calamity :
Amrita will also raise fund to support the relief work in response to natural disaster in any part of the world. The fund will be disseminated through reputed and experienced nonprofits that are serving the respective locations.
The Society for the Welfare of the Blind:
Each year, the Blind Boy's Home at Seoraphuli, run by The Society for the Welfare of the Blind, gives support to about 10-12 blind students from economically backward family to pursue their high school studies (post class X). Amrita-Seattle will financially help The Society for the Welfare of the Blind to set up a much needed permanent residential arrangement for the Blind Boy’s Home by 2012. Amrita-Seattle will also assist this Home with facilities like personal computer equipped with software for blinds, electronic audio devices, regular supply of Braille as well as audio text books and recorded materials, etc., which would help the blind students to their strive for higher education and ultimately rehabilitation into the mainstream of our society.
Adhyanam is an on-going project run by few volunteers in Calcutta, West Bengal, through which needy meritorious but economically poor students, mainly from rural areas in West Bengal receive regular financial assistance to pursue post higher secondary education (after class X) and college level education. Amrita-Seattle will work in direct collaboration with the volunteers of Adhyanam to identify deserving students who would receive direct regular Scholarships from Amrita-Seattle against their individual application. Educational progress of each recipient will be monitored half-yearly by the local volunteers of Adhyanam prior to renewal of the half-yearly scholarship.
Clean Drinking Water Project:
Groundwater in a large part of the West Bengal Basin contains high levels of Arsenic and Fluoride. A fairly large number of people in West Bengal are compelled to drink water having Arsenic and Fluoride concentration above the permissible limit as stipulated by World Health Organization (WHO). Prolonged drinking of water containing high Fluoride and Arsenic may cause fluorosis (degeneration of bone and teeth) and different forms of cancer (skin, lung and other organs) respectively. Amrita-Seattle will directly work with the volunteers of Adhyanam and local activists to identify the affected area and provide water filtration units free of cost to each of the economically poor families in the fluoride and arsenic affected villages. With the help of volunteers of Adhyanam, Amrita-Seattle has already initiated the process of establishing connection with different manufacturers of fluoride and arsenic filtration units in India to get these units at economical cost. Amrita-Seattle has set up a dead line of mid 2011 to provide these filtration units to at least ten families in each fluoride and arsenic affected villages.
